This role sits within a large, complex Australian Government environment delivering secure, resilient ICT services that support nationally significant operations. The organisation operates highly available infrastructure platforms and collaboration services across multiple locations, requiring strong governance, security, and operational maturity.

About the Team

The role is embedded within a Telecommunications and Data Centre Support function that delivers and supports enterprise networking, data centre, and voice/video services. The team consists of a mix of permanent and contract ICT professionals, operating across project delivery and business-as-usual support in a highly regulated environment.

Role Overview

The Senior Unified Communications Engineer provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise across the design, implementation, operation, and optimisation of enterprise Unified Communications (UC) platforms.
The role acts as a primary technical authority for UC capabilities, ensuring solutions are secure, scalable, resilient, and aligned with enterprise architecture and government ICT standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and document business, functional, and technical requirements for UC systems, hardware, workflows, and operating environments
  • Provide subject matter expertise for the design and implementation of Unified Communications capabilities
  • Develop and maintain UC roadmaps in collaboration with architecture, cybersecurity, and infrastructure teams
  • Design and support the implementation of communication, collaboration, and networking solutions
  • Maintain and support UC platforms including telephony, collaboration tools, messaging, desktop and softphones, mobile devices, PBX systems, and voice/video conferencing environments
  • Develop and maintain policies, procedures, standards, and training materials for system administration and appropriate use
  • Research and assess emerging technologies, protocols, products, and standards to inform procurement and capability uplift
  • Collaborate with delivery teams to ensure architectural alignment, consistency, and technical governance
  • Engage stakeholders to resolve complex technical, design, and security issues, including UC system upgrades
  • Contribute to operational strategies, continuous improvement initiatives, and best practice frameworks

Essential Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience designing, deploying, and managing enterprise Unified Communications solutions
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and client service capability
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into detailed technical designs and implementation plans
  • Highly developed diagnostic, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Desirable Experience

  • Understanding of whole-of-government ICT direction and emerging technology trends
  • Hands-on experience operating and supporting voice, video, VoIP, and collaboration platforms
  • Knowledge of ASD Essential Eight and experience contributing to ICT security accreditation activities
  • Exposure to current and emerging networking and collaboration technologies

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Communications, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience
